Thinking about Light, Midtones and Shadows

Learning about Lighting Techniques

Cheat Sheet given to students to support with Lighting page.
Learning about Photoshop Techniques

Inspired by artist Wayne Thiebaud
Students looked at artist Wayne Thiebaud who specialises in his paintings of desserts. They are vibrant and use high contrast imagery with strong shadows.
Students took reference from these ideas into mind when photographing their own chosen food. In class, we learned lighting techniques to manipulate how the food is portrayed.

Y8 Ceramics
Unit 1: Old Hong Kong Buildings – exploring the past through buildings and architecture.
Main Questions:
What details of the building’s architecture tell a story about its history or purpose?
How can you show the texture of materials like brick, stone, or wood using clay?
What shapes and forms make this building unique, and how will you capture them in your sculpture?
How does the building’s age influence the way you want to represent it—pristine, worn, or weathered?
What emotions or memories does this old building evoke, and how can you express that through your clay sculpture?
How can you inform others about the intertwining cultures you experience through texture and objects?

They explore ceramic artists Nathalie Djakou Kassi and her connection to culture and Cydney Ross, who uses experimental clay techniques to create a post-apocalyptic style decaying piece.

Identity - What is it that makes me who I am?
Main Questions:
-
Who am I?
-
What makes me different to others?
-
How can we showcase our beliefs, values, culture and what make us unique visually?
-
What objects give insight into my personality and hobbies?
-
How can I mix colours and shades to create skin tones?

Inspired by artist Michael Craig Martin
Students gathered images of objects from their favourite hobbies, they then traced them onto their work and emulated the style of Michael Craig Martin. Using simple lines, no shading, and primary colours.
We also learned about creating patterns using Zentangle as a form of drawing for mindfulness. Some students chose to continue this through to their final piece, decorating it with repeating patterns.

Inspired by artists:
Nathalie Djakou Kassi & Cydney Ross
Students looked at Nathalie Djakou Kassi and Cydney Ross to develop their clay structures. Inspired by Hong Kong buildings, culture and their own imaginations, students created shop fronts, hotels, skyscrapers, and more.
